✦ built for a repurposed Echo Show 5

echo-dashboard-solo

A phone-free bedside display for an old Echo Show, needing no cloud, no subscription, and no phone.

Why phone-free

The original dashboard leaned on a phone nearby for weather and context. That was fine until the phone was dead, silenced, or in another room. This fork fetches its own weather, keeps its own journal, tracks its own habits, and rings its own alarms. The screen works standalone and is always available, whether or not anything else in the house is charged, connected, or awake.

What's on the screen

Everything it needs, nothing it doesn't

Plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. No build step, no framework, no third-party server.

Weather & Sky

  • Live weather straight from Open-Meteo, including current temp, condition, and high/low
  • Feels-like, wind, humidity, UV index
  • Sunrise & sunset, 5-day forecast
  • Live NWS radar image
  • US EPA Air Quality Index
  • NWS severe weather alerts
  • Night Sky View: a real star map with ~40 brightest stars, connect-the-dots constellations, and planets and moon phase, all computed fully offline

Sleep & Bedside

  • Bedside Mode, a one-tap full-screen dimmed view with rain sound and a huge clock, that stays disabled until dismissed
  • Ambient Mode, an idle-timeout screensaver with a huge clock, photo crossfade, and starfield fallback
  • Sound Machine: built-in ambient sounds plus your own imports, looping gaplessly
  • Wake Alarms that ring entirely client-side, with volume ramping from ~8% to full over 45 seconds
  • Sleep Insights: Bedside session tracking with a 7-day bar chart, 30-day sparkline, weekly average, and night streak
  • Bedtime & Good Morning Briefings, spoken as a recap via browser text-to-speech

Daily Tools

  • Journal for private diary entries, with an optional password lock
  • Habits: a daily checklist with streak counts
  • Reminders that nudge you on a repeating interval
  • Night Routine, a nightly checklist that resets itself
  • Countdown to a date, with an optional yearly repeat
  • World Clock where you add the cities you care about

Utilities & Extras

  • Calculator and unit Converter
  • Word Game for idle moments
  • Custom Sounds: import your own audio via Storage Access Framework for use in both the Sound Machine and Wake Alarms

Personalization

  • 8 full CSS theme reskins to match your mood or room
  • Wallpaper rotation with dominant-color-driven accent
  • Runs entirely offline once loaded, with no account, no cloud, and no subscription

A phone-free fork of the original Aurora + echo-dashboard project, which pairs the display with a companion phone app. This is the standalone variant, currently running on a real repurposed Echo Show 5 beside the bed.
